What is Meditation and what is Mindfulness?


The practice of meditation opens our minds to what is. It is a process that brings our attention to what is happening in the present moment. It quietens the turbulence of the mind so that it becomes calm, silent, yet completely alert. It gives us a chance to step back and pause. We feel more connected to an inner strength, more contented, more at ease with ourselves – and more effective and creative in our daily lives.


This is taught as a series of meditative techniques and that can invoke a state of conscious awareness in different circumstances throughout the day. It has seen a steep rise in popularity in recent years as more people become aware of its many benefits. It is defined as “intentional focused awareness in the present moment, without judgement and with curiosity and compassion”.

Why meditate?

The practice of meditation dates back to ancient times. More recently research has shown the regular practice of meditation to have many physical and mental health benefits including improved concentration, stress reduction, lower blood pressure, pain reduction, boosted immune systems and reduced anxiety and depression.

We spend much of our time either dwelling on the past or worrying about the future, rather than being truly present. Meditation allows us to truly enjoy the moment. We learn to live in the here and now, rather than worrying about the past or future. We worry less about meaningless things, but see the bigger picture.

Meditation enables us to have a deeper understanding of our inner self. Through meditation we can gain a better understanding of life’s possibilities.
